Where answers come from

When you ask a question, an AI reads the list of every file, decides what to search for, and writes an answer from the pages it finds. Before you see it, our software checks each sentence against the page it points to. A quote has to be on that page, word for word. A sentence that doesn't pass is deleted, and the answer tells you how many were deleted. If the files don't cover what you asked, the answer says so.

What it can't do

It only knows what is in the released files. It can't read what the government blacked out. A page reference shows where a document says something, not that the document is right. The text behind each page was read by a machine, from the file or from an old scan, so it has mistakes, and some pages couldn't be read at all. When the text and the picture of the page disagree, the picture is right. "The released files don't say" means we found nothing in them that answers you.

Check it yourself

We're anonymous. The documents aren't. Tap the page number after any sentence and you see the page. Every file page links to the original and shows the fingerprint of our copy (its SHA-256), so you can confirm it is the same file. We never change a copy. When the government changes or adds a file, or when we fix a mistake of ours, it goes in the changes log.

Privacy

Effective Oct 10, 2026

There are no accounts here. We don't use cookies, analytics or third-party trackers, and we don't keep a log of visits. Your browser remembers a few things, like how far down a page you scrolled. Those stay in your browser, and we never see them. Videos and audio play straight from the government's media host. When you press play, your browser asks that host for the file, so the host sees the request.

What happens to your question

When you press Ask, what you typed goes to our server. We send it to Amazon Bedrock to find the matching pages, and to Anthropic, whose AI writes the answer. We keep questions, searches and answers in a log for 30 days. The log has nothing that identifies who asked.

We also keep a question and its answer with no end date. That way, when someone asks the same thing again, the answer comes back faster. Anyone with the answer's link can read both. Don't put personal details in a question.

Your IP address

We never keep your IP address. To limit abuse, we keep a scrambled version of it that can't be turned back into the address. When you ask a question, the scrambling uses a key that changes every day, so one day's version can't be matched to another day's. That version is set to be deleted within 2 days. When you sign up for email, we mix in a secret value before scrambling it. That version is set to be deleted after 24 hours.

If you sign up for email

Nothing has been sent yet. Until we start sending, we keep your address and send nothing to it.

The first email we send you asks you to confirm your address. Until you do, we send nothing else. If you don't confirm, your address is set to be deleted 7 days after that email. If you do, we keep it until you unsubscribe.

We send email through Amazon SES. We never sell or share your address. When you sign up, we never write it to a log.

Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing deletes your address right away. You can also ask to be removed by replying to any email or writing to info@johncompany.co.

John Company is independent. We are not affiliated with the U.S. government.

The files are U.S. government records, which are generally in the public domain. Some files include material made by others, like news clippings or foreign reports. That material may still be under copyright.

Transcripts, descriptions of the frames and answers are written by AI from the files. They can be wrong. Before you rely on one, check the original. Every file's page links to it.

Each sentence in an answer points to the page it relies on. The one exception is a sentence that says the files don't cover something. Our software checks every other sentence against its page. A sentence it can't match to a page is not shown. Anyone with the link to an answer can read the answer and its question.

If you join the email list, the first email asks you to confirm your address. We send nothing else until you do. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.

We provide the site as is, without warranty of any kind.
