· AFOIN-2A2 1v!l.j Fournet/crm/71016 23 Sept 52 .Miss Lots Neuwirth Miss Esther Schilling 328 East Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis, Minnesota De~~ Misses Neuwirth and SchWlng: Your letter of 15 September 1952 was referred to us by the National Security Council. As they told you ln their letter of 17 September 1952, we are responsfole for the "flying saucer" tnvestigatton. Wlth regard to your questions about "flying saucer" reports, we are incloslng a standard release which sets forth the offlclal Air Force attitude and philosophy on the subject. We hope that tt will answer your questions satisfactorily. The only report we have received of a "fire-breathing monster" allegedly seen tn \Vest Vtrglnla has been through the press. Because this observation was made at night and under conditions of cxcitement and, furthermore, since the story has dted a natural death without further mention in the press, we dtscount lt fdirely. It has been noted in the past that a flurry of ''flying saucer" reports wlll stimulate the imagination and gtve rise to many complementary reports evolved through assoclation. We are convtnved that the report from West Vtrglnia represents just such a case where the necessary stimulus was provided by the meteor sighting rel)()rts of the preceding Friday night. We hope that these brtef comments have provided satisfactory answers to your questlo~ '\.I"- _ _. .
