AFOIN-2A2 Maj Fournet/dbv/71016 wrtn 8 Sep 52 (Unclassified) Suggested Reply to Mr. Berridge (Partial) AF Press Desk, OSAF-OPI Deputy Director for Estimates, D/I, DCS/O SEP - 9 1952 Maj Fournet/dbv/71016 AFOIN-2A2 1. In addition to the usual comments to be incorporated into a reply to Mr. Berridge by your office, it is suggested that the following paragraph be included: "The details of the observation which you made were referred to our Intelligence analysts for their study and comment. They have informed me that, although the object could possibly have been a high altitude balloon ascending through different wind strata, they find it impossible to arrive at a definite conclusion. However, they were happy to receive the information and to add it to the data from other sightings which they process and analyze constantly." 2. It is also recommended that appropriate comments be made regarding General Samford's statements during his recent press conference, particularly those dealing with current USAF attitude towards the subject and plans for the future. Stressing his statement about "adequate but not frantic attention" should also help. 3. Mr. Berridge's letter is returned herewith. 1 Incl Ltr fr Wm. A. Berridge dtd 30 Jul 52 WILLIAM W.
