Papua New Guinea asked about U.S. overflights

Department of State, Papua New Guinea, 1985.

The cable is really an airspace question. Papua New Guinea wanted to know whether high-speed, high-altitude aircraft were U.S. flights. That is a sober reminder that some UFO reports begin as unidentified overflights, not alien speculation.

From the file

Papua New Guinea intelligence reported fast-moving objects with lights, contrails, and noise, including an Air Niugini pilot report of radar contact at high altitude and high speed.

The embassy told the National Intelligence Organization that it knew of no B-52 overflights and no U.S. military aircraft in the area.
