He pointed out that knC71'1ledge of such a ~ ssi.ble aircraft is not by aey_means
new and t hat i t was known as early as four years ago that some type of flying
discwas being experisnented...!'i.!.,h by the Rus§,i~s.
In addition he said that mor!;
recent repo~ts .ha.v~ been...received from representatives of the Central Intell~nce
A~ in Sout~ern Europe and Southern Asia to the effect that the Russians were
experimenting wjt]i some type of radical aircraft or guided missile which could be
dispatched for great distances out over the sea, made to turn in flight and ~rn
to the base from which it v.as launcbed.
He related that this information was
extremely worthy of notic9 as experiments in this country have so far onl.y developed
to the point where ~e are concerned with delivering a mi..ssile to the required point
of impact, and no consideration has been given to imparting to that aus sile the
abil ity to return.
He also advised that it is a known f act t hat the Russians are
attempting to develop so~ t~e o!. nuclear energy., that. they .received a wealth..of
information concerning nuclear ~nerSLA,t tbe time of their occupation in Germany,
and that they have at their ..d.is~al a l.im:ited supply of fissionable materials.
He pointed out that the Rµssians have some vecy capable scientists in the field
of atoni: energy and that, in addition thereto, they took into their custody some
of the most advanced and capable scientists of the German Nat ion.
Colonel Gasser stated that a P.eculiar fact conce!:._ning the~ ~iles
is found in reports he has received, that from all appearances the missiles
usually approach the United StatesJrom a northerly direction and have been reported
as~urn7:ng in- a northerly direct ion.
He advised that nO{!e have ever been known
to crash c~llide or disintegrate over American soil, but it woula appear that they
come to the United St ates, cruise around, and go back over the North Pole. He
stated that :insofar as is known to him there has never been a,nz..£!._rt of a missile
of this type recovered from any s::>urce whatever in order that an analytical. study
of its nature could be made.
He stated that on~ report hai been received concerning
a collision of these ~es ~ith another type of aircraft. This report, ac::c::ardi og
to him, emanated from Czechoslovakia and took place a short time prior to the ~Q.tt
ofnumerous cfiscs over the Uni,1:ed States. According to Colonel Gasser a, Czechoslovakian
transport had reportedly collided with some unidentified missile while in mid::air
over1£e"o'cean, ana that the mis§ile and transpor~re co)N?lete~ disinte.ua..ted
without recovery .of parts or survivors fro~her •
. Colonel Gasser concluded that this matter, while still purely a mat\!:
of guesswork, is nevertheless a source of great concern to the military establl.shioont
o(_filils countr,:- He advised that great efforts have been expended by tl_le milJ.i.ary
service to determine the nature of these missiles and upor1so determining, decide
whether or not an adequate defense can'6e eslablished. He stated that it has given
impetus to the research being done by the air force in their own program of nuclear
energy for the propulsion of aircraft to develop guided missiles.
