Mercury fireflies became a science problem
NASA, 1962.
These are NASA scientific debriefing transcripts and follow-up analysis memos from 1962 and 1963 covering Mercury astronauts Glenn, Carpenter, Cooper, and Schirra. They focus on the glowing firefly-like particles seen around the spacecraft and on airglow and horizon effects. The memos show NASA doing patient comparison work, sorting which sightings match which physical cause, which is how a famous mystery becomes an ordinary science and engineering problem.
